Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (20 seats)

(Self Financed Full Time Diploma Course of One Year Duration)

India is perhaps the most happening place on earth as far as the news industry is concerned. For example look at the news papers published in English, Hindi and other regional languages. Despite the unprecedented onslaught of television news they have not only stood their ground but have also recorded significant increase in the numbers of their readers in recent years. Not only in English but in Hindi and other regional languages too daily newspapers and news magazines are recording growth in their circulation and new newspapers are coming up at a pace faster than ever before. Similarly in Hindi and other regional languages the number of television news channels is on the increase and now the Online Journalism is also making its presence felt. Every major news paper and TV news channel has its own website. With the growth of print and electronic media new gates are opening for Photo Journalists too. They are no longer confined to print media alone. Their services are now required in television and web portals too. It was in this background that AJK MCRC as a premier institution of Mass Communication and Media Studies felt the need to introduce a post graduate diploma course in journalism for aspiring journalists.

We started this course from last year with the objective of producing skilled and trained journalists for print and broadcast industry who are committed to issues of ethics, social relevance and human rights. We also train them to work as Online and Photo Journalists. The curriculum of the course is designed to equip the students with the skills and knowledge necessary for a career in all the four mediums and it is tailored in such a fashion that each student spends only 40% of his/her time in learning the theory and the rest in receiving hands on training and doing practical exercises. Students are given extensive hands-on training in writing, reporting and editing news for television, radio, web portals, news papers and magazines. For this purpose a Multi Media Lab with 20 work stations has been set up at the Centre and each work station is fully loaded with important softwares such as QXpress and Photoshop. The lab has a Broadband Connection and the service of news agency UNI is available for the use of students throughout the year. The students also learn to handle and operate digital video and still cameras such as PD 170 and Nickon D 100 under the guidance and supervision of highly experienced camerapersons and still photographers. Seminars and workshops are also organized from time to time during this course on various issues, topics and subjects to enrich the minds of the students.
