Assistant Professor in Film & Cultural Studies, Saumya joined MCRC in 2009. With more than seven years of experience in academics and the media industry, Saumya currently teaches Critical Media Studies, PR & Corporate Communication, Scriptwriting and Editing Principles.
An alumnus and a topper of AJK MCRC, her training in Mass Communication along with a Masters in English Literature from Hindu College, DU helped her approach media both as a practitioner and an academic.
As a freelance filmmaker she has scripted and directed short films for international agencies and corporate houses like Greenpeace, British Council, Xansa UK & India etc. As a participant filmmaker, she documented the international Youth Yatra by British Council and EU that involved participants from Finland, UK, Sri Lanka and India.
Her MA documentary film(16mm) Phata Poster Nikla Hero was screened at the Annual Fringe Festival (Dec. 2005) India Habitat Centre, Delhi and the Russian Cultural Centre (2006). Her first professional documentary was screened at the Annual NASCOMM Foundation Meet, Feb.2006, Mumbai.
Saumya worked with Miditech Productions Ltd. for Star World, and assisted on documentaries at Media Storm , Delhi. As a Deputy Editor, NDTV Convergence Ltd., she led content and revamp initiatives for all the major Lifestyle & Entertainment websites of NDTV. She was declared the Star Performer and also won the Next Big Thing in the Internet award in 2008.
Saumya has been deeply involved with academics as well. As a student she was a researcher and author for an international project of University of South Carolina, Columbia, USA. She won a student stipend-ship by SARAI, CSDS, New Delhi (2004).
Later, she worked as a Lecturer (permanent) in English and Journalism at the University of Delhi (Lady Irwin College) where she taught English, Journalism, A/V Production and Development Communication. Prior to this, she was an Academic Associate with the Communications Area at IIM- Ahmedabad where she designed and taught the post-graduate preparatory module in communications. Even as one of the youngest instructors on the campus, Saumya earned an excellent teaching score from the students and loads of encouragement from her senior colleagues.
More than twenty of her articles on subjects related to gender, politics and cinema have been published online. More notably, some of her work has been published by SARAI, CSDS in New Delhi; University of South Carolina, Columbia, USA and Primus Publications, Delhi (in press).
She has presented papers and participated in international conferences at IIM- Ahmedabad, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi; and University of Westminster, London amongst others.
An avid collector of film posters and cinema art, Saumya's recent research work revolves around the myth of Devdas in Indian cinema.
